Field Note No. 1: The Courage of Capacity

Development is among the defining characteristics of life itself. Horses learn. Children mature. Adults awaken to ways of being they could not previously sustain. We are, thankfully, unfinished creatures. The ethical task is subtler than rejecting possibility: it is refusing to mistake possibility for invitation. There are opportunities within relationships that exist only in potential. There are others that exist fully in the present. Wisdom lies not in preferring one over the other, but in discerning which conversation reality is actually offering. This is not resignation. It is fidelity to the world as it is. And this may be one of the greatest lessons horses offer us.
